These flow from the recent exhibition by the Ben Uri Research Unit, marking the contribution to art in Britain by the so-called ‘Hitler emigres’ on the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of the Second World War. Spread over consecutive Thursdays in October, a range of distinguished experts engage with topics that continue to resonate deeply within our globalised society: identity, migration, displacement and internment - and the power of art to reflect and respond to these issues. Each talk will be preceded by refreshments and followed by an audience Q&A.

Charmian Brinson discusses how cultural activities managed to flourish behind barbed wire, particularly in two very different Isle of Man camps: Rushen women’s camp and Hutchinson men’s camp (the latter often known as the ‘Artists’ Camp, its internees including renowned German artists Kurt Schwitters and Ludwig Meidner). Julia Winckler focusses on the creative output of another Hutchinson internee, the German painter/writer Fred Uhlman; Fran Lloyd, on young Austrian refugee, Ernst Eisenmayer, while Rachel Pistol provides a fascinating account of the reactions of the British press and other contemporary views on this extraordinary moment in Britain's wartime history.

Terry Dennett, who passed away recently, would have turned 80 on 4 February. There will be a service at the Islington Crematorium, 278 High Road, East Finchley, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday 7 February.

We first met at TPW - Toronto Photographer's Workshop, at a comprehensive Jo Spence retrospective in 1997, where Terry was speaking about the legacy of her work and their collaborations. Over the next 20 years, Terry became a mentor and dear friend, always sharing his wide ranging photographic knowledge generously.

Training originally as a painter, for decades Terry worked as staff photographer at the London Zoo, where he had a colour and black & white darkroom and a 9 to 5 job. He also had, what he referred to as his second 5 to 9 job, and would regularly collaborate on projects with researchers, including Shaheed Macgregor, on Eating Rough, Sleeping Rough, a pop-up exhibition made in support of a campaign to address homelessness and raise awareness in the 1990s.
Terry was also the dedicated and tireless founder/keeper of the Jo Spence Memorial Archive
which he ran for 25 years, ensuring Jo Spence' lasting legacy. Terry eventually
oversaw the safe deposit of her research material, at the Toronto's Ryerson
School of Image Arts Archive research centre, at London's Birkbeck institute,
and also with Richard Saltoun Gallery.

Together with Jo Spence, Terry collaborated on many projects from the early
1970s onwards, including The Crisis Project, and they edited the collections Photography/Politics 1 & 2, which produced groundbreaking, political commentary on photographic practices. He also assisted on many of Jo Spence's projects.
Together with Jo Spence, Terry founded the Photography Workshop Ltd in 1974, a grassroots organisation tasked, in Terry's words, 'with researching marginalised or hidden histories and traditions of social radicalism'. The Half Moon Gallery later merged with Terry & Jo's Photography Workshop, eventually creating Camerawork Gallery.

international Phototherapy community by making the archive accessible,
presenting at conferences, giving talks to students (including at the
University of Brighton, University of Roehampton, and in Finland on several occasions) and offering tutorials and access to archival resources freely.
It would have been wonderful to celebrate his 80th birthday together this

I could not think of a more appropriate, atmospheric venue for photographer Justin Partyka's beautiful, evocative photographs of rural photographs from Suffolk and Norfolk than the Black Barn in Cockley Cley, where a large selection of his work has been on view since mid September.

Walking from one barn room to the next, we encounter carefully observed landscapes, sensitive portraits and still lives - made since the late 1990s using a 35 mm analogue SLR camera and transparence film. Partyka explains that he still only makes his work using the analogue process.

He studied folk art and history in Newfoundland and discovered that photography became his preferred way of capturing experiences and encounters. His intuitive way of making photographs and the care he takes to observe minute details and to get to know the people and places he photographs and connect with them make his photographic series burst with experience but also light and colours.

More of Partyka's work can be found here:

The same day, we also visited Magnificent Obsessions: The Artist as Collector at Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, UEA, Norwich.

A version of this exhibition had previously been on view at the Barbican, where I had missed it. I couldn't think of a more beautiful way of displaying Pae White's collection of scarves designed by Vera Neuman - a trip just to see the way the scarves have been suspended in colourful rows would be worthwile. The arrangement of Martin Parr's postcard collection creates fascinating new relationships and topographies - photographs of the artists with their collections at home make possible new insights and help understand the influences of the objects on the artists' own work (e.g. Edmund de Waal's collection echoes his elegant white porcelain vessels).
Turrell explains that our eyes are made for the twilight hour - as our pupils expand - whereas they contract at noon time due to the harshness of light then.

Projection event at dusk - distilling light and experience. Silent projection - with the most subtle of changes:

http://www.textilemuseum.ca/exhibitions/frida-kahlo-through-the-lens-of-nickolas-muray

It combines colour photographs by Nickolas Muray, letters shared between them, jewellery and traditional Mexican costumes. Its a substantial exhibition - there are 50 beautiful black and white and three colour process photographs.
